Smart Sensing Boosts Accuracy and Cuts Input Costs for Growers

New Holland has introduced its latest advancement in precision farming technology — the IntelliSense sprayer automation system paired with its Guardian front boom sprayers.

This innovation helps farmers optimize chemical and fertilizer use while reducing input costs and maximizing field productivity, J. Cole Sanford, cash crop specialist with New Holland, told Farms.com

The IntelliSense system features a forward-looking sensor mounted at the cab’s center line, allowing the sprayer to assess crop quality up to 50 feet ahead. It operates in two main modes: variable rate application and spot spraying.

In variable rate mode, the system uses sunlight reflectance to determine crop health. It increases fertilizer rates in areas showing strong growth potential while reducing application in weaker spots, such as wet or low-quality areas.

This precise control ensures balanced nutrient distribution and prevents wastage. Farmers benefit from both improved yields and lower input costs.

In spot spray mode, the IntelliSense system detects green weeds on a brown soil background during herbicide applications. It automatically turns nozzles on or off as needed across a 135-foot boom, ensuring chemicals are applied only where weeds are detected.

This intelligent control allows spot spraying at speeds up to 19 mph and variable rate applications up to 25 mph, improving productivity without sacrificing accuracy.

According to Sanford, farmers have responded positively to IntelliSense technology, praising its precision, efficiency, and cost-saving potential.
