Simple Self-care Tools Can Ease Stress in Stormy Times

Heavy rains and severe storms continue to affect many communities, causing stress and disruption for families. While damage to property is visible, emotional fatigue is often overlooked.

Sean Brotherson of North Dakota State University Extension reminds people that taking care of their well-being is just as important as addressing physical challenges. “The emotional and physical needs of those who are undergoing stress from weather conditions are sometimes forgotten during a crisis,” he explains.

Self-care plays a critical role in building resilience during difficult times. Prioritize sleep, maintain healthy meals, and create a routine to bring stability. These habits help reduce tension and improve focus.

Helpful tips include -

  • Scheduling regular short breaks for stress relief

  • Delegating tasks and seeking help when overwhelmed

  • Saying no without guilt to preserve energy

  • Communicating needs to understanding people

  • Keeping a realistic view of what you can manage

  • Using humour and optimism as coping tools

“Individuals sometimes try to be invulnerable to fatigue, stress, frustration and depression,” Brotherson notes. “Often, the demand on their energies is so great that they think they can muddle through.”

Outside support—from family, friends, or mental health workers—can provide emotional strength and reduce the burden of responsibilities. Sharing tasks makes recovery more achievable.

Brotherson encourages communities to stand together, ensuring everyone receives the support they need. For more disaster-related wellness resources, visit ndsu.ag/disasterinfo.
