Jaran Farms Ltd. Grows canola, oats, wheat, lentils and peas

Jason and Jenna Ranger from Shellbrook, Sask., were excited to learn yesterday that they had won the Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ competition.  The announcement was made at an event during Canada’s Farm Progress Show.

Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program is designed to recognize young farmers in the province who exemplify excellence in their profession.

The next step for the Rangers will be to represent Saskatchewan farmers when they compete against national finalists from across Canada for Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers at the national event in Fredericton, N.B., from December 4 to 8, 2019.

What made Jason and Jenna stand out?  Jason grew up on a farm near Leask, Sask., where his parents have been farming since 1978.  He started his own farm in 2006 when he started farming 2400 acres, putting his agriculture degree on hold while he took advantage of an opportunity to farm.  Jason loved farming so much that he decided to not pursue his agriculture degree, but decided instead to focus on taking several shorter courses in the winters to increase his agricultural knowledge, and to continue farming full time.

Meanwhile, Jenna also grew up on a mixed farm near Manyberries, Alta. She moved to Saskatoon to study Dentistry at the U of Saskatchewan.  Jenna became earned her Doctor of Dentistry in 2011 and started practicing in Prince Albert.  Jenna has a private practice and is also Chief of Dentistry at Victoria Hospital.

Jason and Jenna met in 2008, were married in 2012, and welcomed their first child, Bridget Sloane in 2017.   Over the years, Jason and Jenna have also continued to grow their farm, and currently are farming 10,700 acres -- growing primarily canola, oats, wheat, lentils and peas.

Congratulations to the exemplary finalists for the Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program, which included Scott and Heather Langelaar, Piro Poultry Farms Ltd., from Waldheim, and Cody Straza and Allison Squires, Upland Organics Ltd., from Wood Mountain.
