Climate change tops concerns for Canadian producers
A recent poll by Farmers for Climate Solutions highlights that climate change is a top concern for Canadian farmers and ranchers. Conducted by Leger between August 8 and September 4, 2024, the poll surveyed 858 producers across Canada, revealing their concerns about severe weather, reduced yields, and income losses.
Eighteen percent of respondents identified climate change as the primary challenge facing agriculture over the next decade, closely followed by rising input costs at 17%. Alarmingly, 79% of farmers expressed concerns about reduced farm income due to climate change, while 76% worried about lower yields.
“Farmers and ranchers across Canada are living the reality of severe weather and understand that climate change puts our livelihoods at risk,” said Brent Preston, President of Farmers for Climate Solutions. “The results of this poll provide valuable insights into the challenges we’re facing and show that farmers are ready to adapt.”
The poll revealed that 76% of farmers had experienced operational impacts from severe weather in the past five years, with 34% reporting significant effects. To address these challenges, farmers are adopting sustainable practices such as improved nitrogen management, no-till farming, wildlife habitat conservation, cover cropping, and rotational grazing.
Economic benefits play a crucial role in adopting these practices, making policy support and financial incentives essential. Experts believe that training, risk management tools, and government support are vital for helping farmers transition to sustainable methods.
“Bold climate action in agriculture is possible,” said Preston. “Farmers and ranchers see the challenges ahead, want to help develop effective solutions, and are clear on the support they need to move forward.”
