USW backs new drought-resistant wheat development

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has officially deregulated the HB4® drought-tolerant wheat trait, marking a significant advancement in agricultural biotechnology. This trait, developed by Bioceres Crop Solutions, aims to provide substantial benefits to both producers and consumers by enhancing wheat’s resilience to drought conditions.

“A drought-tolerant trait offers more stable and sustainable production. At the same time, it is important that customers who may be concerned about introducing transgenic wheat into U.S. supplies understand the industry supports their ability to purchase the type of wheat they want. That remains our policy after more than 16 years.” – Michael Peters, USW Past Chairman.

USW is closely monitoring the steps following USDA’s approval to ensure that HB4® wheat's introduction into commercial markets aligns with established biotechnology principles. These include conducting rigorous field trials and obtaining necessary approvals in key wheat-importing countries.

The trait's potential to reduce the impact of drought on wheat yields is viewed as a critical development at a time when global wheat demand is steadily increasing.

By supporting the commercialization of HB4®, USW demonstrates its commitment to fostering innovations that meet the challenges of modern agriculture while respecting consumer choices.
