Reducing NOx emissions with new DEF production plant

Genesis Fertilizers is advancing a new fertilizer production facility designed to produce 2,500 metric tons per day (MTPD) of urea melt using Stamicarbon's Adiabatic Flash technology.

Stamicarbon’s NX STAMI Urea technology is integral to the facility, offering energy-saving features and advanced reactor designs, ensuring high efficiency and minimal environmental impact. The inclusion of DEF production is part of Genesis Fertilizers' innovative approach to addressing both agricultural and environmental challenges.

This technology focuses on improving operational efficiency and reliability while minimizing steam consumption. The facility will also feature a DEF production plant with a 1,500 MTPD capacity to produce ISO 22241-compliant DEF, essential for reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines.

"This partnership reflects our commitment to bringing world-class technologies that support sustainable fertilizer production," said Jason Mann, CEO of Genesis Fertilizers. "Stamicarbon's proven expertise in urea and DEF production strengthens our ability to deliver low-carbon solutions tailored to the needs of Western Canadian farmers."

"Our proprietary NX STAMI Urea and DEF technologies are designed to meet the unique needs of Genesis Fertilizers' transformative project," said Pejman Djavdan, CEO of Stamicarbon. "We are proud to support a project that embodies innovation, sustainability, and collaboration."

This partnership builds on Genesis Fertilizers' recent commitment to the Front-End Engineering Design phase of the project, furthering their mission to support Western Canadian farmers by providing locally sourced, stable fertilizers.

Genesis Fertilizers aims to commence commercial operations by 2029, with ongoing updates to keep stakeholders informed about progress, milestones, and new partnerships.

Genesis Fertilizers, a privately held company, plans to finance, design, and build a new nitrogen fertilizer production and distribution system, strategically located near low-cost raw materials, with distribution centers focused on farmer needs across Western Canada.

Stamicarbon, part of MAIRE S.p.A., is a leading provider of technology solutions for fertilizer production, specializing in urea, green ammonia, and nitric acid. With 75 years of experience, Stamicarbon is committed to sustainability and global food security.
