A new construction project will give Alberta farmers another grain marketing option.
G3 announced plans to construct a new grain terminal near Carmangay, Alta. on Oct. 26. Construction is expected to begin soon, and the elevator could start accepting grain by 2020.
The 272-acre facility will be located on the east side of Highway 23 on the Canadian Pacific rail line.
Construction will include a concrete elevator and three steel bins, each with a 24-metre (78-foot) diameter.
The facility will hold 42,000-tonnes of grain and be able to empty a Super-B truck in less than five minutes and load 134-car trains in “a matter of hours,” the company says.
It will also create up to 14 full-time jobs in the community.
“G3 Carmangay is designed to save farmers’ time and keep their grain moving to market,” Don Chapman, CEO of G3, said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to being part of the community in and around Vulcan County and showing farmers how our industry-leading speed and efficiency can benefit their business.”
G3 approached the Village of Carmangay about the terminal in July.
Growers expressed excitement about the project during a council meeting in August.
“A new large elevator would be huge for Carmangay, the County of Vulcan and area farmers,” Mike Smith said on Aug. 17, The Vulcan Advocate reported. “I feel like we’re lucky to have someone like G3 come in and select our location for this new elevator. I think it’s going to be a huge boost for the town of Carmangay and for everyone in the area.”
G3’s terminal in Vancouver is also expected to open in 2020.
