Unlocking profitability with optimal corn moisture levels

Navigating the timing of corn harvest is crucial for maximizing agricultural yields. Emerging research suggests that harvesting corn at higher moisture contents can significantly enhance both yield and profitability.

Greg Trame of GSI explains that waiting for corn to dry down to lower moisture levels in the field can cause significant yield reductions due to "invisible losses," such as reduced kernel weight and increased susceptibility to environmental damage. These losses are compounded by mechanical damage where dry corn results in more kernels lost during the harvesting process.

A recent study at the PTI research farm demonstrated that corn harvested at 27% moisture yielded an average of 254.3 bushels per acre, significantly higher than corn harvested at drier levels. This research highlighted not only the yield benefits but also the economic advantages of harvesting at this moisture level, considering the cost of drying using a GSI continuous flow dryer.

Further economic analysis comparing on-farm drying with local commercial elevator costs revealed substantial savings when using on-farm drying methods, further supporting the case for early harvest.

To aid farmers in decision-making, GSI has developed an early harvest ROI calculator. This tool helps estimate the financial impact of harvest timing on yield and profitability, guiding farmers towards more informed harvesting decisions.

Farmers interested in optimizing their harvest timing can access the Early Harvest Calculator and detailed research findings at grainsystems.com, ensuring they make the most out of this year's crop.
