Toronto-based indoor farming company transforms food access in Moldova with first-of-its-kind humanitarian hydroponic project

A new Canadian-led indoor farming project is changing lives in Moldova. Built by Just Vertical in partnership with GlobalMedic, the hydroponic farm is the first of its kind used for humanitarian aid in Eastern Europe. This advanced farming system now grows more than 1,000 plants at a time, providing year-round access to fresh food.

Located in Rîșcova, Moldova, the farm helps feed both local families and Ukrainian refugees. Moldova, a country bordering Ukraine and Romania, has faced serious farming challenges due to harsh winters, limited economic resources, and disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine. Over 127,000 Ukrainian refugees currently live in Moldova, creating higher demand for food in already struggling communities.

The indoor farm uses a green wall system with 1,024 plant ports. It grows pesticide-free crops that are culturally important to both Moldovans and Ukrainians. This system does not depend on weather or soil and needs fewer resources, making it perfect for areas facing climate issues and food insecurity.

“Conflict, climate, and economic instability have made it increasingly difficult for communities to access fresh food,” said Conner Tidd, Co-Founder and CEO of Just Vertical. “By implementing hydroponic technology in Moldova, we’re giving people the tools to grow their own food—helping to create long-term stability in an unpredictable world.”

The success of the project has been captured in the award-winning documentary Moldova Feeds, which recently won Best Short Documentary – Advertising at the 2025 Niagara Canada International Film Festival. The film features interviews, visuals, and the farm’s story.

This effort is supported by GlobalMedic, Katalyst Kitchens, and the Myhal Foundation. It is Just Vertical’s first major humanitarian project in Eastern Europe, showing how Canadian innovation can bring food security to communities in need.

This farm offers hope, resilience, and a model for future global food security projects.
