Alberta farmers are inching closer to the halfway point of seeding completion.

Growers have planted about 38 per cent of their provincial crops, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s May 15 crop report says. That number is up 30 per cent from last week.

Farmers in the Southern Region are the furthest along.

Producers in that region have planted almost 54 per cent of their total crops, the report says. That number is up from 24 per cent last week but is behind the 75 per cent five-year average.

Potatoes within that region are 75 per cent planted, dry peas are almost 68 per cent planted and lentils are 60 per cent seeded.

About 8 per cent of the crops within the region have emerged, Alberta Agriculture reported.

Growers in the Northwest Region have planted 35 per cent of their crops, which is the next highest of the province’s six regions. That number represents an increase of about 34 per cent from last week.

Dry peas are the furthest along in the region, with more than 76 per cent of the crop seeded.

Farmers in the Peace Region have completed 32 per cent of their seeding. That’s up from less than 1 per cent completed last week.

Spring wheat seeding is the furthest along in the region with 37 per cent of the crop planted.

Farmers in Alberta’s Northeast Region have planted 30 per cent of their 2018 crops, which is up from about 1.5 per cent last week.

Growers in the area have seeded almost 83 per cent of their dry peas crop.

And farmers in the Central Region have planted 29 per cent of their crops, which is the lowest of the six regions.

That number is, however, up from 4.1 per cent last week.

The dry peas crop in the region is the furthest along, with 58 per cent of the crop planted.

And about 3 per cent of the total crops in the region have emerged, Alberta Agriculture says.
