Grant Wood’s 1930 painting earned him a $300 prize from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Wood used his sister and his dentist as models for a farmer and his daughter. At the time, many art critics thought the painting was a satire of rural life. The painting’s popularity peaked during the Great Depression when it was praised as a representation of hardworking men and women.
