
This NASA astronaut flew to the International Space Station in August 2009, where he managed the transfer of more than 18,000 pounds (8,164kg) of supplies between the shuttle and space station.
Before that experience, however, Hernandez and his parents were migrant workers.
“My childhood was typical of a migrant farm working family, a family that spends nine months out of the year picking fruits and vegetables from Southern California to Northern California,” he told CNN in March 2016.
Hernandez documented his life from farm fields to space suits in his book, Reaching for the Stars.
