4-H Canada kicks off participation in Canada 150

National awareness campaign will help highlight 4-H’s importance

4-H Canada announced its participation in Canada 150 as the country readies to celebrate its 150th birthday in July 2017.

The project, called “4-H Canada, Empowering Youth and Connecting Communities,” will see the organization support local celebrations of agriculture and bring communities together. 4-H will also run a national awareness campaign to highlight the importance the organization plays in Canadian culture.

 “As we embark upon an exciting year as part of Canada 150, and reflect upon the themes of inclusion, diversity and inspiration, we are excited to engage youth and connect communities who can access resources and contribute to positive change as part of the 4-H movement,” Shannon Benner, CEO of 4-H Canada, said in a release. “There is truly no greater time than now for 4-H in Canada.”

The federal government is supporting 4-H’s initiative with a $375,000 investment. Along with other investors, 4-H will be able to funnel nearly $625,000 into helping empower youth.

“Young Canadians from diverse communities will come together to learn more about the fascinating agricultural history of their country,” The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, said in the release. “The 150th anniversary of Confederation represents a unique opportunity to celebrate our past, our achievements and the wealth of our environment.”
