Farms.com Participates in Hog Jog for Parkinson’s Disease Research

Stratford, Ontario ~ On Wednesday, June 21, six members of the Farms.com family of companies participated in the first Annual Pork for a Cause - Hog Jog. The event, organized by the Ontario Pork Industry Council, consisted of a 10k run or 5k walk. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Parkinson Society of Canada, Southwestern Region.

“I was really glad I participated in the OPIC Hog Jog,” said Linda Weitzel, M&F Trading. “Not only was it an opportunity for the Ontario pork industry to work together for a worthwhile cause, but it also allowed members of the Farms.com "team" to get to know one another on a more personal basis. It has given us a bond that we would not have had otherwise.”

All the business units of the Farms.com family of companies were represented by at least one person. “Not only did we have a non-runner, Richard McDonald, volunteer his time coming to assist as a Field Marshall, we were very generously sponsored by our fellow employees," Weitzel added.

The inaugural event had 203 participants and raised more than $18,000 for the Parkinson Society of Canada.

“I participated on the organizing committee for the Hog Jog and am proud of what we accomplished,” said Bob Fraser, Farms.com. “I have a father-in-law with Parkinson’s disease, so it gave me an extra reason to run hard.”

The Honorary Chairman for the first Hog Jog, Richard Hiscocks, is a well-known, long time supporter of the pork industry. He is also affected by Parkinson’s disease, which served as an inspiration for many of the participants.

“It was great to have the Honorary Chairman of the event, Richard Hiscocks, present and taking part in the run/walk. It made me realize the importance of the cause,” said Alison Besley, AgCareers.com. “And reaching the finish line was a great feeling and sense of accomplishment!”

Parkinson’s disease affects an estimated 100,000 Canadians, according to the Parkinson Society of Canada, and more than 1.5 million Americans, according to the National Parkinson Foundation. Over 60,000 new cases of Parkinson’s disease are diagnosed each year.
