Funding helps Ontario produce get into Subway restaurants

Greenbelt Fund is providing $90K

When people visit Subway restaurants this harvest season and ask for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and onions, those vegetables will be sourced from local farms.

Along with the Ontario Government, the Greenbelt Fund will provide $90,000 to Burnac Produce, Canada’s largest produce distributor, to ensure all 1,300 Ontario locations feature locally grown vegetables.

“Supporting our farmers and providing locally-grown fresh vegetables in our shops when they are in season is not only good for our farmers, but for our guests and the local community,” said Jonna Thomas, Food Scientist with SUBWAY® restaurants in a release. “We are committed to providing our guests with the highest quality ingredients and offerings across the globe, and we are proud to serve seasonal, top quality Ontario-grown produce in our sandwich shops throughout the province.”

David Capobianco, Director of Foodservice at Burnac Produce said the organization is always looking to bring more farmers to the table.

The Subway initiative is only one of ten projects in the Greater Golden Horseshow region being funded by the Greenbelt Fund.

About $1.3 million is being invested across the province to bring more local food to Ontarians.
