The latest Crop Progress report came a day late from the USDA, delayed by the Columbus Day holiday, on Tuesday, October 09, 2018. This week’s report shows the US corn crop’s development tracking ahead of schedule compared to previous years while the US soybean crop this year seems to be falling more in line with its normal pace of progress.
The report indicated that the US corn crop was nearly fully mature at 93 percent nationwide, ahead of normal by 10 points and last year’s pace of 80. As of last week, 34 percent of the crop has been harvested, compared to 21 percent at this time in 2017 and 26 percent on average over the past five years. The crop’s condition changed only slightly this report compared to the previous week with a single point adjustment down in the good to excellent rating from 69 to 68 percent into the fair category which is recorded at 20 percent and a poor to very poor rating of 12 percent.
The “I” states are faring well with Illinois leading the traditional Corn Belt at 82 percent good to excellent currently, followed by Nebraska at 79 percent, Indiana at 72 percent and Iowa at 70 percent good to excellent. Kansas and Missouri pick up at the end of the range at 47 and 28 percent good to excellent respectively.
The US soybean crop meanwhile, is nearly complete with the dropping leaves stage at 91 percent, just ahead of 88 last year and 85 the average. Thus far, 32 percent of the crop has been harvested, falling just short of previous year’s pace of 34 percent and four points behind the average pace. Soybean’s condition is holding steady this week rated at 68 percent good to excellent, 22 fair and 10 poor to very poor.
Across cotton country, harvest is one-quarter of the way complete at precisely 25 percent, near 24 last year and ahead of 18 the average. Currently, 78 percent of the US cotton crop has bolls opening with a condition rating unchanged since the week before at 42 percent good to excellent, 33 fair and 25 percent poor to very poor.
Pasture and range conditions this week across the US are slightly better than the previous week, up one point at the top end of the range currently at 48 percent good to excellent. In our region, Oklahoma’s pasture and range rating improved by four points to 54 percent good to excellent. Kansas improved as well to 49 percent good to excellent, up from 45 and Texas rates 54 percent good to excellent this week up 7 points from the last report. Arizona continues to lag the rest of the ag-centric states at 68 percent poor to very poor, followed by California currently at 60 percent poor to very poor.

Looking at things in our three-state region -
In Oklahoma, winter wheat planted reached 60 percent, up 20 points from the previous year and up 4 points from normal. Winter wheat emerged reached 28 percent, up 15 points from the previous year and up 3 points from normal. Corn mature reached 93 percent, up 2 points from the previous year. Corn harvested reached 58 percent, up 6 points from the previous year. Sorghum mature reached 64 percent, down 10 points from the previous year. Sorghum harvested reached 41 percent, up 5 points from the previous year. Sorghum’s condition rates 71 good to excellent, 12 fair and 17 poor to very poor. Cotton bolls opening reached 74 percent, up 5 points from the previous year. Cotton harvested reached 7 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 5 points from normal. Cotton’s condition rates 14 good to excellent, 78 fair and 8 poor to very poor.

In Kansas, winter wheat planted was 58 percent, well ahead of 26 last year, and ahead of 49 for the five-year average. Emerged was 33 percent, ahead of 14 last year and 25 average. Corn mature was 95 percent, ahead of 87 last year, and near 91 average. Harvested was 59 percent, ahead of 45 last year and 52 average. Corn’s condition rates 47 percent good to excellent, 28 fair and 25 poor to very poor. Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 23 fair, 54 good, and 16 excellent. Sorghum mature was 70 percent, ahead of 58 last year and 63 average. Harvested was 16 percent, ahead of 9 last year, but near 18 average. Sorghum’s condition rates 70 good to excellent, 23 fair and 7 poor to very poor. Cotton condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 25 fair, 60 good, and 14 excellent. Cotton bolls opening was 73 percent, ahead of 57 last year and 58 average. Harvested was 1 percent, near 5 last year and 3 average.
