Nearly 90-Percent of Corn Crop Now Planted Across U.S.

U.S. farmers report 87 percent of corn acreage has been planted against a five-year average of 66 percent by this week of the year. According to a report from Reuters, farmers report that 56 percent of the crop has emerged, which is well ahead of the five-year average of 28 percent by this week of the year and the 15 percent emergence rate from a week earlier.

Producers also say they are ahead of long-term averages in planting for cotton, soybeans, sorghum, peanuts, sunflowers, sugarbeets, rice, oats, barley and spring wheat, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its weekly report.

Farmers report cotton is 48 percent planted. Soybeans are 46 percent planted and 16 percent emerged. Rice is 80 percent planted, just ahead of the five-year average of 77 percent.

Winter wheat is also ahead of its long-term average with 72 percent headed out, compared to a five-year average of 46 percent for this week of the year.
