USDA Appoints Experienced Leader to Support State Farmers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has appointed George Turner as the new State Executive Director (SED) of the Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Maryland. Turner officially joined the Maryland FSA team on August 25, 2025, bringing more than four decades of agricultural expertise to the role.

Turner’s appointment reflects the federal commitment to supporting America’s farming communities. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins highlighted the importance of strong leadership, noting that these appointments help ensure the nation’s rural areas benefit from policies that put farmers first.

FSA Administrator Bill Beam added that SEDs are essential for delivering USDA programs and providing direct support to local producers.

Turner has served Maryland agriculture for 41 years, most recently as FSA District Director for District 2. Earlier in his career, he worked as the County Executive Director for the Worcester County FSA office. His extensive knowledge of Maryland’s farming landscape makes him well prepared to lead statewide initiatives.

“FSA State Executive Directors serve in a critical role carrying out USDA’s mission at the state level — ensuring that our focus is on meeting the needs of local agricultural producers by putting farmers and ranchers first,” said FSA Administrator Bill Beam.

“Rural communities need our support now more than ever. Our newly appointed state leaders bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their position as SED, and they will play an integral role in shaping the future of agriculture in their state.”

As State Executive Director, Turner will oversee the implementation of critical FSA programs that include commodity support, conservation measures, credit and loan services, and disaster assistance. These programs are vital to maintaining a safe, affordable, and plentiful supply of food, fiber, and fuel for Americans.

The USDA’s Farm Service Agency works to help farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners invest in, protect, and expand their operations. Through a national network of state and county offices, FSA administers agricultural policy, manages conservation efforts, and provides key financial assistance.

Turner’s leadership is expected to strengthen Maryland’s agricultural sector and ensure that farmers and ranchers receive the support they need to thrive.
