Jose Ramirez grew up in Hanford, Calif. and started working in pepper fields before donning boxing gloves.
“I went out to work, picking bell peppers from five in the morning all the way until 3:30 in the afternoon,” he told The Orange County Register last year. “I was getting home at four in the afternoon and then going to the gym at 4:30.”
