Pea Leaf Weevil Heading Our Way

May 25, 2018

Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers is warning growers to be on the lookout for pea leaf weevil, which affects both peas and faba beans.

Production Specialist Laryssa Stevenson says the pest has been found in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

"We haven't found it so far in Manitoba but populations have been on the rise and moving eastward," she explained. "Weevils have been found in 2017 in northwest North Dakota and along the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border. We're urging farmers and agronomists, especially in the western half of our province, to scout for this potential new pest in peas."

She notes the larvae will cause economic damage by feeding on root nodules, adding the adult weevils will feed on pea leaves, leaving really distinct notching on the leaf margins. This makes the pest easily identifiable.
